Eat, I Mean Tax, the Rich
There has been a photograph of Warren Buffet going around Facebook lately that says something or another about how he owes a bunch of money, so why should he keep championing the idea that billionaires need to be taxed? I can’t seem to find the image at the moment (if you’ve seen it, please feel free to post it below), but I find it highly ironic that the people who post it are not billionaires and seem to have no problem paying their own taxes, so why object to people who aren’t paying theirs?
The Pay a Fair Share Act might just make this happen, too. It is simply unconscionable that if you make millions or billions of dollars, you get to pay a smaller tax rate than those in the middle class who are struggling to simply feed their families these days. The Act would ensure that such rich people would have to pay a 30% tax rate, closing the gaping loopholes that allow them to sneak by with paying a significantly smaller share than the rest of us.
I know lots of middle class people who are working multiple jobs in order to keep their heads above water; I know others who went from a secure middle class to living paycheck to paycheck after the recession hit in 2008. My family was one of these; we now make half of what we used to make combined, following a layoff each from good jobs. I still know working families who’ve served our country and now must rely on food stamps to support their children. This is not tolerable, especially in a country we hail as so promising and prosperous as the United States.
Even Mitt Romney, likely presidential hopeful for the Right, has failed to pay more than 14% of his own taxes from 2010, which is far less than the majority of us pay. Why have someone like that represent us? How about having Romney start paying these taxes rather than spend his money on further campaigning? He can obviously afford it without even feeling a dent in his wallet, and since he’s obviously so worried about the poor people in our country to begin with, we could ease his mind a bit with his “donation.”
Let’s hold billionaires accountable for their fair share instead of cutting back programs that so many hardworking individuals rely on. If you endorse the Pay a Fair Share Act, please click the link to voice your support.
